A General Practitioner is the term used for doctors who are responsible for diagnosing and treating different kinds of common diseases. Most General Practitioners are family doctors so they have knowledge about everyday health and wellbeing. These doctors have good relationships with their patients and their families and perform regular checkups for them.
General Practitioners fall into two main categories. The first category is Doctor of Medicine, M.D and the second category is known as Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, D.O. The latter category includes specialization in musculoskeletal system of the body, but the overall responsibilities of the two are the same.
If you want to become a General Practitioner, the first thing you need to do is to fulfill all the academic requirements. When you are done with high school, you should go on to complete your GEDs so that you can pursue medicine as higher education. Once you are done with your GEDs, you can apply in a medical program in a college and get your bachelor's degree. Although it is not necessary to choose a specific field for becoming a General Practitioner, it is always better to choose a path that is related to it.
When you successfully complete your bachelor's degree, you can then take admission in a medical college. This is the difficult part, because competition is tough and you need to be very talented and hard working in order to get into a good medical school.
After you have completed all your educational requirements, you will have to get some practical experience before you can become a licensed General Practitioner. This means a three year residency at a hospital or a clinic where you can work with doctors and learn from them. This is an important part of your career as a General Practitioner because you will learn how to actually deal with patients and have a good relationship with them.
When you have completed three years of residency, you will be required to pass an exam after which you can successfully become a General Practitioner. Before you take this exam, make sure to research about rules and regulations of your state regarding General Practitioners so that you do not miss out any specific requirements.
In this way, you can successfully become a General Practitioner and practice medicine in your state. Although it is a long and tough process, it is an excellent career choice.
