Before we move on to the actual core of the topic, we must first have brief overview of the big yellow taxi song. This song was actually written and performed by Joni Mitchell in 1970. Since then, there have been various cover versions made from the original song. The cover versions with the years that they were made in are as follows:
1970:
For his album the New Morning in 1970, Bob Dylan recorded one version of the song but it was not released until 1973. He had then slightly rewritten the lyrics and it made the song even more famous.
Joe Dassin in the same year translated the big yellow taxi song into the French "Le Grand Parking".
1980:
The late B.B. Gabor at that time made a slow jazzy cover and the song's title was also referenced by Janet Jackson in her single, 'The Pleasure Principle'.
1990s:
The era of 90s saw a great variation in the versions of big yellow taxi. Maire Brennen released the same song as a single with a promotional video which had charted on the world and on the Celtic charts in the various countries. After that, the Californian punk rock band 'Pinhead Gunpowder' covered the song up for their debut album which was known as Jump Salty.
1995 saw that Amy Grant had released a cover of big yellow taxi in the pop version and it was the fourth radio single in her house of love album. 1996 saw a great hit in the song when it came to #39 on the U.S. Dance Charts with a mind blowing traffic jam remix version. After that, in 1997, a live performance of the song was seen at the finale night of Lilith Fair girls which included Indigo Girls, Jewel, Meredith Brooks and Sarah McLachlan.
2000s:
Featuring Vanessa Carlton in the backing up vocals with Counting Crows, the cover of the song was put as the soundtrack of the movie two weeks notice in around 2002. After that, in 2007, German pop singer named Nena recorded another version which was named as 'Cover Me'.
Along with the Buena Vista Social Club, Aquila Rose and Idana Valdes covered big yellow taxi in their song for the 2009 album Rhythms Del Mundo Classics.
So many different versions of big yellow taxi automatically tell how famous the song was ... and is till yet.
