Located on the picturesque banks of the Genesee River is a city that is definitely one of a kind: Rochester NY. From its somewhat humble beginnings as a milling town, Rochester ny gradually developed into what is now the third largest city in New York State, a journey that was highlighted by its establishment as a township in the year 1817. It was from that date to the entire area was known as "Rochesterville", owing to the efforts of one Colonel Nathaniel Rochester along with two other partners. By the time 1822 rolled along, work on the nearby Erie Canal had finally been completed. This event was significant since it was then that Rochester NY became a major business center. Along with this development came the shortening of the citys name to Rochester.
The improved access to nearby business centers resulted in the construction of numerous flourmills in this city. It was this development in turn that led to the adoption of an informal nickname for the city: "Flour City."
Rochester NY was also given a nickname that was interesting in that it was related to its earlier nickname. The establishment of a seed company that later became one of the largest nurseries in the area also resulted in the city being called "Flower City."
Rochester NY has made its mark on the social political scene as well. The city has long been known as a politically progressive one, with a rich history of social activism. It was one of the first cities in the union to free a large number of slaves, including the historical figure Frederick Douglass. Douglass of course was responsible for the publication of the now legendary North Star newspaper.
Another notable resident of Rochester NY was Susan B. Anthony, and the historic womens rights activist contributed largely to University of Rochesters admission of women beginning in the year 1900. To this very day Susan B. Anthony remains a source of pride for residents of Rochester NY, and no tour of the city would be complete without a stop at the house which stands in her honor on Madison Street.
Of course Rochester NY has since grown into a remarkably high tech industrial and cultural urban center as well. With most of its more significant accomplishments in this front being the Xerox and the Eastman Kodak companies, this in turn gave rise to yet another nickname: "The Worlds Image Center." In spite of all of these nicknames however, there is no confusion in the fact that Rochester NY is one of the most unique and distinctive cities in the United States.
